FUN( D) RAISING WITH FUNKY FRIENDS OCTOBER 20, 2022 BAREFOOT EVENTS ,  BAREFOOT FRIENDS ,  BAREFOOT MISSIONS “I cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.” –  Mother Teresa They say it takes a village to raise a child. Leaving her mark in more than one village in Siem Reap is a petite woman with big talent, and an even bigger heart. Her calling is to provide a livelihood for mothers to raise their children in dignity, so that these children can have proper nutrition, a good education, and a bright future ahead. Her name is Anna Tsang. Together with her husband, Joseph, a pillar of strength and support, 2022 marks their 9th year of humanitarian work in Cambodia. When the dark cloud of Covid lifted this year, Anna returned to Singapore to put up a fashion show featuring Eco and Wearable Art, together with artisanal pottery by The Other Potters. It was an event helmed entirely by friends of Anna, old and new – models were...

The Enigma of Gillman Barracks ( first posted on thebarefootfoodie.org on 29 May 2022 )

The Enigma of Gillman Barracks MAY 29, 2022 BAREFOOT ARTS (UPDATE-as of Mar 2023, FOM tours for art and history are back on Sat afternoons ) A Sudden and Abrupt Farewell The news dropped like a hot rock and the impact was hard. After 10 years of working in collaboration with GB since its formative years from 2012 till now, this small tribe of GB Art and History volunteer docents guided our last tours on 14 May 2022. Inexplicably, the curtain came down for us just as SLA made its official announcement that it was going to rejuvenate GB with a new mix of tenants and a slew of fresh measures to inject more vibrancy into the place. The GB website which featured the galleries, on-going exhibitions, events and past exhibitions, was also “de-activated “ Night Falls Upon Gillman Barracks Expectations and Reality Check GB was launched in 2012 with much fanfare, after a rather underwhelming Gillman Village failed to generate the crowds for a lifestyle, shopping and food hub. It was rebrand...

A Forest Reverie ( first posted on thebarefootfoodie.org on 14 Feb 2022 )

A Forest Reverie FEBRUARY 14, 2022 BAREFOOT ARTS ,  BAREFOOT LIVING ,  SINGAPORE ART WEEK Roughing it out is not my idea of fun. Not until it combines an art installation, a secondary forest, and three guys comprising a renown artist,( Robert Zhao Ren-Hui ) an art curator, ( John Tung ) and a conservation-friendly architect ( Randy Chan ) who made IT happen. Robert, the artist, with a penchant for history, nature and collecting found objects, did his residency in NTUCCA tucked in one corner of Gillman Barracks for a year from 2017-2018. During this period, he explored the surrounding forest extensively, and this laid the groundwork for his show at the Singapore Bienale 2019 called ” The Queen’s Own Hill and its Environs ” which displays a cabinet of curiosities of photography, video, scavenged items based on archival research which is part reality, part fiction, part fantasy. This is a continuation of his exploration into Singapore’s forest landscape which is a converge...

Catwalk for a Cause ( first posted on thebarefootfoodie.org on 8 Sep 2019 )

Catwalk for a Cause SEPTEMBER 8, 2019 BAREFOOT EVENTS Fashion for everyday folks as fund-raising is something that Anna Tsang is adept at. She is a gifted designer who has been based in Siem Reap for the past seven years, helping mothers in villages to sew and raise their children with dignity ( MOD – Mothers of Dignity ) Her husband, Joe, is by her side, providing support in every way, multi-tasking as teacher, facilitator, and a much needed Father figure to the children. Every few times a year, Anna returns to Singapore with her bounty of outfits and accessories sewn by these mothers. That’s where the fun begins. The models are drawn from all walks of life, in all shapes and sizes. Anna has a knack of creating clothes that suit everyone. They may not look like much on the racks but once you try them on, a certain magical transformation takes place. This took place in May. Stay turned for another exiting event coming up on 11 Oct. Presenting Emily and Anna She Models and Sho...
