Indelibly Rajesthan Part 9 – Jaipur
Did the usual sight-seeing stuff here, like the must do Ajmer Fort, City Palace, and Albert Hall Museum, all very impressive. As it was G’s birthday, dinner had to be somewhere special and the Rambagh Palace was a fitting venue. It was akin to a walk back in time to the age of the Mughuls, in grand style and aplomb.
Shopping can be a rather challenging experience, while you are whisked from one shop after another, with over-enthusiastic merchants who ply you with a bewildering range and array of goods with no price tags. You simply have to trust your instincts, or lack of it, and how much you lust after the goods not to walk away. Going to a so-called Government Co-operative with fixed prices was no help. After a rather fruitful session there, I told the driver about it, and he stoically replied with a straight face that the building belongs to the government, but the merchants inside are not. It was slowly beginning to sink in that all is not what it appears here.
One of the high points must be watching a 3 1/2 hour Bollywood movie ( starring Shahrukh Khan naturally ) in an over-the-top candy floss pink cinema which is THE place to catch a Bollywood in India. We had the full experience, and ended up being true blue fans. I resolve never to turn my nose up at Bollywood again, and repent for my past. What have I been doing and missing all my life? Some serious soul-searching is in order.
